When you are presented with a stressful situation that occurs frequently because life likes to keep the plot going, it’s easy to get in your head and allow the stress to overwhelm and control your choices and attitude. I get it! When I get hit with a stressful situation, I tend to internalize my feelings, which causes me to have an adverse outward reaction to the world around me. It’s human to be overwhelmed and stressed under challenging situations; however, what if there was a better way to cope and respond to them?

Here at Athens Health & Fitness, we’re dedicated to your physical and mental health. It’s hard enough to start your fitness journey, and we’re proud of every single one and will continue to offer encouragement as you grow your physical strength, but it’s hard to settle into a workout space if your mental health isn’t being cared for. Here are three tips from the Athens Health & Fitness team to promote healthy mental habits and strong mental health.

  1. Find Time for Self-Care—We know you’re hitting the gym, and we’re so glad you’re here, but are you finding time to rest, too? Self-careSelf-care could look like having a relaxing bath, going on a mini shopping spree, taking the time to care for your body in a calming or meditative way, and being gentle with yourself when things are stressful.

  2. Write Down How You’re Feeling—Sometimes when we write out or verbalize our stressful feelings, they lose their power, and we can process the stress more quickly. We recommend jotting down your thoughts and feelings, leaving them on the kitchen counter or in your car, and then coming to the gym for a workout! Safe coping mechanisms help us identify the stressors, examine them after we’ve taken a step back, and give us a space to process them and enjoy the activities we actually love, like lifting weights or running on the treadmill.

  3. Move Your Body When You’re Anxious—Anxiety is energy, which means if you’re encountering a stressful situation and need to relocate that energy, get up and take a walk! It seems simple, but it’s great for your mental health. Being outside improves your mood and health and gives you a break from any stressful environments that might occur.

We can’t wait to hear how you’re using these tips in your life! Let us know by emailing us at info@athenshealthandfitness.com or visiting the gym and starting your fitness journey.
